Barbara,

I think you will find that the hinges join the door to a formed metal strip as
an assembly. you aren't intended to disconnect the hinges, you are expected to
attach the strip to the house door frame, hinges door and all.

There should also be a strip for the open side of the door and another across
the top. The top piece may be connected to the side frame metal pieces or if
not there may be a thick aluminium peg to attach it at each end.

The original weather stripping is probably integrated in the metal frame though
by now it might be damaged or even gone. This can be substituted.

The hinges, (I guess they were left from the door that was previously on
there), is on the outside of the wooden door frame. Actually, I went outside
and looked at the door again, and I am beginning to think I am going to have to
take that metal piece off of the wooden door frame, goodness!

So, you are saying that right now there are several hinges attached to the
storm door and a wooden board? Is that right?

It is aluminum all around and the hinges that is in the wooden door frame is
several inches apart thus being several hinges. Also, there is weather
stripping. This house is 10 years old.

  OK,

This aluminium door, is it still on a wooden frame or are the hinges hinged
to an aluminium frame?

Many storm doors include the frame as an integral part of the door. You just
fit the aluminium frame over the existing door frame and run screws through
holes in that aluminium frame.

If your old door came away it might be that you need to remove the old
aluminium frame from the house door frame and replace it with the frame and
door you just bought. This is a nice arrangement because it makes mounting the
door much easier and easier to get it square.

Oh gee that's weird because I sure didn't have any pics. This is an aluminum
door, with glass and screen. My previous door was broken as a result of the
strong wind. The hinges are still attached to the outside. I had to literally
raise up the broken storm door and it slid right out of the hinges from bottom
to top. I do have an extra set of hands to help me with this project. Like I
said before, the handle and the lock is going to be tricky to put on. Barbara

  Hi Barbara,

Are you saying you bought a storm door and it is attached to a wooden frame?
Is this frame complete on all 4 sides? Is the storm door an aluminium door
mounted in an aluminium frame or is it a wooden door?

  We'll start there.

By the way, did you have pictures associated with this message? My computer
indicated that it did not download pictures to prevent the sender from

I am trying to put up a storm door and the metal hinges are screwed to the
wooden door frame so I guess I will have to take that off the door frame and
slide that over top of the side of the door, right? I got it very cheap at a
donated place and I had to buy the handle and lock that goes on the door
itself, but I think I have everything I have to have to put up the door,
hopefully. Putting on that handle and lock I think is going to be tricky!
Suggestions appreciated, and confirmation of being on track, thanks in advance.
