Hi Rob.

In this original post you didn't give any context.  I have read through all 
the answers and it may be that you want to double up batteries in a truck or 
car.  I don't see any problems with that because the two batteries would 
always be charged and discharged together.  There might be an issue if one 
of them came to the end of its life.  Depending on the failure mode it might 
just put all the load on the remaining battery in which case you might not 
know for a long time.  If it failed shorted there could be catastrophic 
results.  You wouldn't need a bigger alternator and regulator.  The 
regulator would continue to tell the alternator to deliver the same amount 
of current it always did and it would divide more or less equally between 
the two.

Now, if you are just talking about charging two batteries at once from a 
charger to save time it wouldn't save you a second.  The battery charger 
delivers a fixed amount of current and it would divide more or less equally 
between the two.  With each one getting half the current it would take twice 
as long.  Issues of charge condition and loop current between the two 
batteries have already been covered.
