Been there and done that! My front porch is very high about 11". For years I made a simulated Christmas tree from the roof to the railing. I started with a coil of wire used for hanging drop ceilings. I first made a large A frame shape. then with pieces of wire a few inches long started securing Christmas lights to the A frame shape. I then took more lights and ran them back and forth filling in the tree. The final step was using green and gold garland and again twisting the wire around holding it in place. Quite a few years ago we had an exceptionally cold and windy January. the wind was ripping the garland so I decided it was time to take it down. There was no way while wearing gloves to untwist the wires. I could not stay out for more than 5 minutes. After about a half hour of this I went in the basement and located my diagonal cutters and the trash can. I cut up the lights, garland and framing wire. After about 3 minutes my wife came out a little upset. I told her that I was not freezing my hands for about $10 worth of lights and garland. In a few weeks I will again be reminded of that project. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Victor Gouveia" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, November 14, 2007 9:22 AM Subject: Re: [BlindHandyMan] Hanging Christmas Lights
Just wanted to chime in on this thread. A more cheaper alternative to the zip ties are twist ties that come on the end of bread bags. Cince they will be coming down after Christmas, you may not want to spend all that money on something like zip ties, as most of them will have to be discarded after you're done with them. A twist tie will come undone rather quickly, and if you want to re-use them again, you can just pack them away with the lights. You can also get speaker wire, and cut them to length, then just twist them into place.
