Not that I have personally tried this method of fluid level checking, but 
it has been discussed here before.  The most common solution seems to be 
to use a tube and lower it into the fill spout and either blow in the 
tube, or squeeze a bulb on the tube.  When you hear bubbles, you are at 
the surface of the liquid.  So you just need to cut the tube to the proper 
length, or mark it.  Thus, you are measuring from the top down, rather 
than the bottom up.
