I had a couple of them. One of my kids used one for a project he was making
and with the tin snips cut through the metal and my tape... I think it's
still illegal to shoot at kids...

I once had one of the older tapes and pretty well hated it. Didn't take long
for it to crack and ultimately break at one of the inch markings where the tape
was weakened by embossing which is probably why they discontinued that method
and went to the plastic ruler.

I used to have a 6 foot tape like that but that was years ago and it has been
lost in 1 of many moves. The explanation is exactly right. In the newer larger
tapes they mount the tab on the front and you pull the tape out under it. On
the smaller tape the first 6 inches were marked on the tape itself.

I think the point is that it gives you the finer measure. You can run the
tape out to say 3 feet but the next mark is 3 foot 6. If the actual measure is
3.54 and 5 16ths you couldn't measure that without the ruler.

Now I don't have one of those and probably don't want one but that is my
understanding.

  Hope that is correct.

Ok, what's with the 6 inch ridged plastic ruler mounted on the tactile tape
measure?
Looks like it could easily be removed, but is it worth while?
  Should I leave it alone?
I also ordered the marked yard stick, so I have both.
Seems pretty strait forward just looking at them.
