I used to hear that and tea leaves too. I suspect though it would be like adding sand to mud, rather than scour the drain out I suspect they would more likely settle into any semi-liquid grease and turn it into something like concrete.
I know the theory is that they grind the goo away or that it sticks to the grounds and is carried away like that and some of that may be true if they fly through the drain at high enough speed.
