Dear List Members:
Husqvarna is my favorite chain saw, however Stihl is also a popular and
reliable piece of equipment. I live in a rural area where timber cutting and
pulpwood harvesting are big business, and those fellows will nearly always have
one of these two brands in their trucks.
Much of the harvesting today is being done by monster machines which grab
the tree while standing and then a hydraulically powered chain saw cuts the
tree, after which the machine lifts the whole tree and places it where the
operator desires. The next step is a large piece of equipment that pulls the
tree through a device that removes the limbs.
The days of the mule and the cross-cut saw seem quite distant.
I bought my wife the first chain saw, a homelite, thirty years ago, and at
that time it was as good as any other brand around, but apparently homelite,
McCullic and others rested on their laurels and lost out in the market share
department.
New York is not the only place where folks borrow firewood. It is not
uncommon for some folks to simply stop on a rural road and cut the trees which
are close to the road, even though the harvester has no title to the property.
Usually, thieves are not that gifted when it comes to hard work.

                Yours Truly,

                Clifford Wilson
