Bill, Just imagine a circ saw on a hinge. It moves up and down. So, you could only cut a 12 inch board if you had a really large saw, on your basic mitre saw. If you had a sliding mitre, it might cut a six or eight inch board, but you could then drag it forward another couple of inches after you brought the saw all the way down.
