Do you have any big trees around this area?  Also, how far down below ground 
level is this drain?  You mentioned a basement, that's got to be at least 8 
feet below ground level unless your foundation is really elevated.  I'm 
wondering if this area where the snake couldn't go any further is an elbow? 
Usually big thick roots are just below the surface of the ground, and 
littler roots go deep into the ground.  I know a Plummer is quite expensive, 
but you might get another opinion
