Dear Dan:
I don't have the measurements of your basement, but assuming you have the
room, I would suggest the building of peers of either treated six by sixes on
their ends, or by using concrete block which could be filled with concrete.
Constructing a number of these in a line through the center, keeping the tops
level with the edges. These can be as far apart as eight feet. A beam of two
by boards is then run through the center with floor joists tied in from each
side.Depending on how wide the basement is, the joists may be allowed to rest
on the edge of the concrete floor, but if the span is too long, treated wood
blocks could be used to further support the joist between the center beam and
the edge. Once you have the joists in place, you can floor it with the
material of your choice, but I would suggest leaving a hinged door in the
floor to give you access to the drain, and putting in some type of warning
device to tell you when the water is rising, would be a plus. There are drains
which will let water go down, but not back up, and if you have the space to
install one of those drains, it might be a good investment

I hope this may have helped, but I would guess that you have already
thought of this approach, and have discarded it.

                Yours Truly,

                Clifford Wilson.
