Rob, we did just that, removed a wall  to install a m8ixer behind the 
tub for showers or baths.  however when it was all done many years ago 
we  cut the exact size for the drywall. a maybe 4 by four  piece and 
then  before painting used the old handy dandy duck tape  to leave  sort 
of like tabs. the board got painted and put back in place. against that 
wall  is lots of towels and much bigger kitchyen pots . Nothing comes 
easy Rob but steady work does pay off.Lee
