I would think the repair would be straight forward. It would be a matter of
finding the model and serial number and then ordering a shock from the
manufacturer.

I have one about the same age. The shock is more of an aid to raise the
incline of the tread. There should be a couple wing or star nuts on the
sides that tighten when you raise it to where you want. The boards
shouldn't be necessary to hold the end up. The trouble would be if your
back is bad, you would have to still raise the end and then tighten the nuts
to hold the position.

Taking the shock out will require removing a bit of junk first. The motor
and chain cover is on that end and will no doubt have to come off so you can
get to the bolts that hold it together. Much of what you take off will be
sheet metal screws so be careful putting it back together. One bit of
advice before you start. Find the shock first so you can see what it looks
like before you start. Also this way you won't take things apart and forget
how it goes back together.
