is oil conductive?
I'm thinking two long wires about 1/2 inch different in length.
expose a 1/8 of the wire out of the insulation.
Feed them down and when they touch...
You could use something like a liquid level indicator with those wires 
alligator clipped to the leads to make a beeping.
But is oil conductive?
