I've not tried this, but I've been told you can sometimes get good results by spreading fertilizer the same way you can rock salt. I have a product that I've never used (because of not wanting to track the stuff inside), that apparently causes some pretty serious grass growth along walkways etc. where it's used because of the ingredients.
