The only catch is that the bucket must be straight sided. An ordinary bucket that is flared out at the top will over estimate the rainfall because the water will be deeper at the bottom of the bucket than it should be. The flared out top catches more rain than the bottom can hold and keep the same depth. Yes, an inch of rain really is a cubic inch of rain per square inch of area.
