  Subject: [BlindHandyMan] The window

Lately I been a busy boy. My wife just loves getting me into trouble. We
started out laying porcelain tile down for my neighbor, after she paid a
plumber a small fortune to lay down a third of a piece of plywood and
refused to lay the cement board, tell her she didn't want porcelain tile.
The plumber was so nice, he even put the top of the floor flange even with
the floor. Which made the flange 3/4 inches below floor level after the 1/2
inch cement board and tile. So after lifting the toilet, and laying the
board and tile, I had to double wax ring the toilet and find toilet bolts
that were long enough to make a secure fastening of the toilet to the
floor. Than my nice wife suggest we put a window in the bathroom. Thinking
the house was a frame house, I didn't think it would be to much of a job, so
I told the women, I would get my son's resipicating saw and they could saw
the hole in no time. Well I measured out the window, or should I say, I held
the tape out, and had them read the figures. So I came up with a side slider
32 inch Wide by 19 inch high window, still not knowing what I found out
yesterday. the house was a block house some one furred out with 3/4 inch
furring strip, both on the inside for the plasterboard and the outside vinyl
siding. I already ordered the window (not to smart of me, was it?)before I
checked things out), so I had no choice but to precede. As they scored the
plasterboard so I could finish cutting it out I removed part of the
plasterboard and the women went into a tizzy, when they seen the cement
blocks staring back at us. and I began to wonder how a blind guy can get
into so much trouble without trying. After all, I am blind, and blind people
shouldn't be doing these things. Or maybe my neighbor is right an I am not
blind, but just think I am. But any way, out came my cold chisels to get
them ready for a job I thought was going to be a job for a wood saw. So I
went outside and remove the siding and grab my four pound sledge and I went
to work cutting out a 35 inch by 24 inch hole. It only took me about 5 hours
to knock out the blocks and frame in the rough opening. Tomorrow the window
is suppose to get here, and it is just a matter of putting on the trim,
plus re-installing the siding, and I will be done. But don't worry, for it
isn't the end of the story, but that is for another time. For my kind wife
has offer to volunteer me for another project.
And I will be dam if my wife will take me not being able to see as a excuse.
  RJ
