When I was a kid my next door neighbor had a great way of keeping his digging tools in good shape. He had a ash bucket (a short bushel metal trash can, filled with sand and used motor oil. When he used his digging gardening tools for cleaning he would thrust them into the sand and oil bucket. The sand being abrasive would clean and polish the shovels and claw digging tools. The oil coating would prevent rust. Each fall after the mowing season was over he would take the mower blade off sharpen and then use the sand and oil bucket to clean and protect the blade over the winter. His tools always looked in a very good condition. That was about 50 years ago. About a year or so ago I saw this on DIY TV as a gardening tip. Thinking about Mr. Minnick I remembered something else that he did to his mower. The pull rope retractor broke. When he priced the part he purchased a electric hand drill in place. He then had about a 2 foot rod welded onto a socket. He took the pull start mechanism off of the mower and just used the drill as a starter. That mower then started every time in less than 30 seconds.
