I had a very interesting battle with some mold. A few weeks ago some nasty smelling mold starting growing in my bathroom sink drain above the trap. We first used drain cleaner and within two days the smell was back. I then poured Clorox both down the drain and overflow. Again within a few days the smell was back. It was not in any other drain in the house. I took the popup assembly apart for a better cleaning with more Clorox. Again in a few days the smell was back. So I removed the entire sink drain and replaced with new. I also cleaned as best as I could the bottom of the sink drain and overflow area. After it was reassembled I felt pretty good. Well about a week later the smell started to become pronounced. This time I disconnected the s-trap where the nut connected to the down cane pipe. I put a zip-lock bag over the end of the s-trap and use the nut to hold it in place. I then slowly filled the sink with ammonia. When it was at the level just above the drain I closed the popup stopper. I then used a funnel and filled the overflow. I left it sit this way for a few hours. I then cut the zip-lock bag to drain the ammonia. Hooked up everything and the sink has been odor free for over a week. Yesterday, my daughter told me that she is starting to smell it in the workshop sink. That is where I tried to clean the first popup. Got my bottle of ammonia and slowly poured it into the drain. I placed a wet shop rag over the drain and about six hours flushed that drain and no odor. I fought the mold, and I won. A friend stated that mold is the new asbestos. I tend to agree with him.
