Those will be very large doors to support. Big beefy hinges big beefy side
framing members. A 4 or 5 foot door really likes to sag.

Subject: [BlindHandyMan] Roll-up Door will soon be history.

The front door of my shop is a 9 foot wide, 6 and a half foot high roll-up
door. It is literally that. There are three disks about a foot in diameter
and when the door is raised big springs roll it up. It's very thin and
conducts a lot of heat in and out. There is no good way to insulate because
of the constant flexing and the fact that it rolls up like a rug. I have
decided to scrap it and replace it with a double swing-out door that I can
insulate. I'm going to beef up the frame so the new door will only be 7
feet wide but it will actually be a little higher because the roll-up door
doesn't go up quite all the way. The roll-up door is mounted totally on the
inside so I can build the frame and hang the doors before removing the
roll-up. No security breach during installation. Oh, yes. I have given
considerable thought to how to safely unwind those springs. The sheet comes
off the roll and down through channels on each side. Each channel has a
stop to prevent the door from going up past the top of the opening. My plan
is to remove the stops and tie ropes around the roll to keep it from
unrolling. Then I can unwind the springs and unbolt the assembly.

  Regards.
