Dan, have you considered using a dolly or hand truck to lug those things up the stairs?
I'm just thinking that it would take a lot less energy to lug it up using your arms, then your entire body. I remember when I had to cart fridges and stoves up stairs for some people, and remember thinking that it would have been so much easier to use the hand truck to lug the stuff up, then it did to carry it.
