Most battery operated devices contain a diode to keep current from flowing
in the wrong direction. Without this diode if the batteries are put in
backward the first thing that happens is that all the electronics cooks.
This creates a dead short on the batteries and while the user is trying to
figure out why the device isn't working and what that funny smell is the
batteries explode blowing the battery compartment cover off, shooting
corrosive chemicals everywhere.
