After a long talk with Harry at talking thermostats.com I installed the vip. The reason that the service contract is void with a programmable is because the technicians only use the round Honeywell. When/if there is a problem with the programmable and they are called out at 2 in the morning they can not replace or reset it. I have placed a small jumper wire inside the vip for quick access. before I call just remove the front of the vip and jump the rh and w terminals if the unit fires it is a thermostat problem if it does not it is a furnace problem. I did earlier talk to the owner of the furnace and he explained why but when heard the vip prior to installing he said that I really need it. I have a call in for him to tell my plans and he should have no problem because the thermostat will be ruled out prior to them dispatching a service man.
