I could add that sometimes we would also take a thin square stick and pear a 
point on it with a knife. The purpose is only to hold the cane tightly in place 
in the hole while pulling each stroke tight.

Most pencils will be a way too thick but maybe pinch the nephew's tinker toy 
rods they would be about right.

Like Lee said, a crank style sharpener was what we used but even those little 
plastic ones with a long enough taper would do just fine.
