Hi Rita,
Every time I think of a cat tree I tend to get a little upset. Almost 50
years ago I had an after school job at a pet shop. In the basement there was
some extra carpet and some lumber. I made a scratching post out of the
scraps then on top fastened a screen door spring and secured a rubber mouse
to the end that flopped around. The owner was so impressed that he had me
make several for sale. A few weeks later one of his suppliers came in and
looked at them. He purchased two and a few months later came in and told us
that we can no longer make them that they are in his catalog.
Now that I am finished ranting it is very easy to do. If you have or know of
any home construction or remodeling projects ask one of the workers for a
scrap piece of 2x4 about 15" high and a scrap piece of plywood about 14
square. You can then take a strong wood glue such as tight bond and glue
the 2x4 to the center of the plywood or use screws to hold it in place. Then
wrap the post with carpet and carefully staple it to the post. Go to a
hardware store for a screen door spring and a pet shop for some toy to
fasten to the other end. You can also get some spray catnip for the post.
If you can't get the plywood a few more pieces of 2x4 can be used. make a
plus sign shape for the base and glue the post on the center.

Subject: [BlindHandyMan] putting together a cat tree

Cat trees are very expensive. I am wondering if a lumber yard would be
willing to cut a variety of shapes from some kind of wood and I could
cover them with scraps of carpet. Or would this be a complex project.
Any advice?
Thanks for any tips to do this and keep it simple. I could get some help,
but not much. Rita
