You can perform a continuity check with a meter. Just turn off the power, remove the two wires which are connected to the coil (if this is electric of course) and place a probe on each terminal from which you removed the wires. This worked for me when I tested my water heater, but this was over 15 years ago. I'm sure not much has changed in that time.
