I regret to have to gently disagree with Dale, but in the case of a general
coverage receive antenna neither of Dale's points is really relivant.

Although it's true that in a resonant transmitting antenna, the bandwidth is
greater with larger element diameter, this won't be important in an antenna
whose resonant frequency probably won't be known or make much difference.

Also, every article I've seen on wire antennas says to use stranded wire,
most often coper clad steel wire for serious transmitting wires.
Particularly in receive antennas the eddy current won't be signifficant.

The increased durability of stranded wire will be of more importance than
all of these considerations unless the whole thing will be protected from
weather wind and any other movement.
