Hi Keith, I forgot to address your question about jigs.
Most jigs don't seem to be commercially available. There are an incredible number of miter gauges, some really quite expensive. I don't own any but the one that came with my table saw and I probably should since it is poor as are most stock miter gauges. I did buy a tennoning jig, it is pretty good but also a lot of money and I probably could have as well built one. I saw a tapering jig for sale I think at Lee Valley but I had made one and will make a better one when I again need it. I also have a dove tail jig which is a little small for the next project I have in mind, I expect I will use it to make a much longer one so I can cut dove tails for a blanket chest. I have not yet seen a commercial box joint jig. I have made a couple, this one I most recently made is easily the best so far but still not quite as accurate as it should be so I will probably have to do another. There are some circle cutting jigs I see for sale for use with routers, I have seen somewhere a mortising jig too but I can't remember where, I think for a router and of course there are miter boxes for use with a hand saw. Mostly though jigs are shop made, purpose built cross cut angle jigs for the table saw, tapering jigs and panel cutting jigs for example. I don't much use my miter gauge any more, I use it more now on my shop built router table. I now more often use my sliding compound miter saw but still, I should probably get myself a really good one for those occasions where it is needed. Hope this is helpful. ----- Original Message ----- From: Keith Christian To: [email protected] Sent: Saturday, December 27, 2008 11:20 PM Subject: [BlindHandyMan] Measurements and Jigs Hi, What are some of the different techniques for measuring and marking wood before cutting? I am not as accurate as I'd like to be with my braille ruler. I have heard people write about being within a 16th or 32nd and that amazes me. I usually cut just a little less off than I need and then carefully trim to size. It would be nice to be able to measure, score, and cut the first time. I'd like to get my hands on some of the jigs or attachments that are being discussed for table saws. Would a Home Depot or Lowe's have these types of accessories to put my hands on? I'm interested in seeing runners, t tracks, cross cut sleds, miter gages, etc. If there are other attachments that are a must see, let me know. Thanks, Keith [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
