They do split point but not brad point. This is a great little machine and while I hesitate to say any blind person could use it, most can.
There is no way to hurt yourself unless you want to with it. The grinding wheels are all enclosed with ports to insert a chuck into. To set up a drill bit you just push the chuck into a port and the chuck stops at a shoulder, then the bit bottoms out against a step. By bottoming out the chuck the bit is pushed back to the correct depth. Then all you do is move the chuck and bit to the correct port and sharpen the bit.
