As I mentioned in an earlier post that I did not like the way that the
auto-switch works. It is fantastic for controlling the shop vac when a tool
such as a sander is hooked up. The problem that I have with the unit is that
there is no way just to operate the shop vac without running the tool. I
purchased the parts to make a simple override circuit. It consists of three
surface mount boxes that can be ganged together making one triple box, a
face plate with two outlets and a switch two outlets and a three way switch.
I plan to assemble it tomorrow when I can get my grandson to help so he can
learn how to wire a switch or outlet.
Anyway the main power will go to the first outlet on the right. From there
the neutral and ground will be taken to the second outlet. The hot wire will
be taken to one side of the switch. I have a 12 gauge pigtail plug. This
will have the hot wire wired to the other side of the switch. The third poll
on the switch will be wired to the middle outlet.
How it will work.
The auto-switch will be plugged into the bottom right outlet. the
auto-switch is wide enough to cover both bottom outlets.
The pigtail wire will be plugged into the accessory portion of the
auto-switch. I have a power strip then plugged into the auto-switch tool
outlet. The shop vac is plugged into the top of the middle outlet. my
sanders plugged into the power strip. with the auto-switch selector set to
automatic. Now when any of the sanders are turned on the shop vac will be
powered and will run for a few seconds after the sander is turned off.
If I want to use the shop vac without a sander the three way switch on the
block will just turn on the shop vac not needing a power tool.
So the three way switch on the block will in one position send the power
directly to the shop vac and in the other position allow the power to be
controlled by the auto-switch.
The top right outlet on the block will always be live if ever needed. And
the switch on the auto-switch will allow the tool to run without the shop
vac.
The total cost would be about the same as a remote control switch but I
don't have to carry a remote around or misplace it. The auto-switch was $20
and all of the parts were about $15
