Scott, it will not save you any money at all to switch the heat pump off. At 10 degrees your heat pump might be only using one forth the power it does at full load. Normally a heat pump in heating mode only uses half the power or less that it does in cooling mode. That is one of the reasons the efficiency ratings are calculated the way they are. ................bob
