I remember a long time ago my parents taking me to buy an AB battery pack
for a portable radio I had won in a singing contest. The little mom and pop
radio store kept the batteries in a refrigerator. The man said to let it
warm up before using it. Those were surely zink carbon. That must have
been at least a couple of hundred years ago.

Regards.
