It won't hurt it, but it won't help much either. Old gas turns into a type of lacquer and it will most likely need to be soaked in some carb cleaner. That is specially designed to cut grease and lacquer build up. You can buy a gallon of it from NAPA, it's been a while since I bought some but I'd guess somewhere around $30 to $40 now.
