Wow, thanks all for the ideas. I like the idea of putting this  
prefinished stuff on, but might be the more expensive route. However,  
one advantage I can see is it would likely reduce the height of each  
step just a little I imagine. Well options are a good thing and Bob  
you are correct in that the carpet does catch most the dirt. The only  
real issue is hiding the dirt between cleanings. grin.
