My impression is that developments are being driven by the sudden popularity of 
the IPOD for listening to music.  I was amazed at how much it's now possible to 
spend on something to stick in your ear.
Another factor seems to be that people are aging, and there are more and 
different types of hearing aids and augmentation devices available.
