Pipe dope works fine on any threaded fittings. We even used it when installing propane. The best way I've found to apply it is with your fingers. I just squeeze some on to the threads and run it around the threads working it into them with my thumb and first finger. I guess I missed the beginning of this thread, So, could someone tell me if it's okay to use pipe dope on plastic fittings, IE, where the bath tub drain attaches to the plastic threaded fitting under the tub? That's what it is actually called and it comes in a tube. Since it's for the pool filter, I'd stick with something like that over the silicone sealers. Silicone works great on pipes but not so good if you have to take them apart later.
