I've sometimes just use plains backwards, on the pull, even though it makes holding them hard. You have much better controll.
I agree about scrapers, they cut, sand paper grinds and leaves junk in the pours of the wood. All good violin makers finish with scrapers wherever possible. Tom Fowle
