Depending on how much iron you have in your water, once a month flushing may suffice. However if you are like me, a lot of times, I have better things to do, than needless things. Here's what I did on my system. I installed a pressure gauge on the larger line before the nipple that goes to the pressure switch. When I replaced the nipple that goes to the pressure switch, I also installed a T on the nipple, just before the switch and installed another pressure gauge there. Now by checking the pressures on both gauges, (which should be equil).
I can tell when it is time to clean the nipple. Except for my water being on the hard side, I have no softener or other treatment in the system, and it has been over ten years since I had to replace that nipple.
