There are a couple of good articles about RFID keys on www.HowStuffWorks.com
My friends have a Toyota Prius and you don't even put a key in an ignition. When you walk up to the car, it automatically unlocks the doors, when you walk away, it locks them. (Assuming you have the key fob). When you get in the car, you can put the fob in the dash board to activate things. It's very strange though to not actually turn a key and put the car in gear. The Prius has a shift lever, but it doesn't move into discrete positions, you just flick it one way and the car is in forward, or another way and the car is in reverse, but the joy stick always returns to center. -- Blue skies.
