Well, there are a couple of caveats with the clunker program. You have to have owned the car, and had it insured for at least one year. It has to fit the milage criteria which means it has to get no more than 18 miles per gal. if you want the full 4500 bucks. Your new car has to get at least 10 miles per gal more than the clunker. And, if the car is worth more than 4500 bucks, you might as well sell it instead. Lastly, I've heard a suggestion that you don't tell the car dealer that you have a clunker to trade in, until after you have settled on a price for your new car.
