Yikes, now I get it; Rob, I don't see why you couldn't use the chainsaw to split the 16-18" lengths once you've cut them off the log. I apologize for misunderstanding what you wanted to do. True, that's a bit "unconventional," but there's no reason you can't do that. My Dad and I used to do it all the time -- Northern Wisconsin has some of those huge Oaks as well.
