I had the some problem about six months ago, and my sighted wife figured out 
what was wrong.  My sawsall is variable speed and there is a dial near the 
trigger that goes from zero to about nine, and my wife told me somehow I had 
inadvertantly moved the dial to zero.  When I tried to use the saw, it was 
totally dead.  I also thought it was the brushes, but all it was, was that dial 
- it had to be off zero.

Hope your problem is as simple as mine was.
