About a week ago my daughter's computer started acting up. Sometimes it
would not boot, then she received a few messages stating that her anti-virus
program was not compatible. Then she started getting messages that system
files were corrupted and were being removed.
I tried to help her recover first thinking that it was a virus. She is using
one of the best anti-virus programs so I was surprised at that thought. When
we could not recover or even boot in safe mode off to the computer shop we
go.
Talking to the repair guy I was not totally convinced that it was a software
issue. At first he re-assured me that it was software and should not be hard
to correct. After two days Kelly got her machine back with new memory. It
was hardware the memory chip failed. I once had a hard drive that acted like
that and my old computer the failing mother board produced similar results.
I have always found it interesting that a hardware problem may mimic a
software problem. It takes me back to the late 60s and 70s when we as
software developers would argue with the field engineers over a problem.
They would insist that the problem is software and we insisted that the
problem was hardware.
