I am in the process of making a wishing well planter for a gift. The one that I made for Karen was never treated just lightly burned with a torch to make it look old. When the the wood is scorched I was told that the wood pours are sealed. Since that one is under the porch roof it held up very well. The one that I am making will probably sit out in the open.
