You are right, that the humidity has probably swelled the door or its frame or both. Traditionally one takes the door down and planes off the sticking area. I like to use something like a thin putty knife or spatula, what ever you prefer to call it and slide it down the crack between the door and the frame looking for the tight spots. sometimes you find that the door has shifted out of square, more often it is the building which has shifted but in any event a quick finger around the inside of the frame when the door is closed and you can usually feel a growing gap along the top or side. Often a small adjustment of the hinges is all you need. Removing a hinge from the wall or door or even both and sliding a shaped playing card or two as a shim between the hinge and the wood can be all that is required. If the gap is bigger at the hinge side of the top you probably need to shim out the top hinge. If there are three hinges you may need to add a little at the middle one as well and so on.
If the hinge edge is a nice even line and so across the top then you will probably have to shave a little off of the catch side of the door to get it free but that will damage the finished edge. Sometimes the hinge screws are not straight so they protrude into the space between the leaves of the hinge, one or two maybe more. If you can remove one or two and the door closes then you should fill the screw holes and reset the screws straight. Hope this gives you a few ideas. I don't like to take a plane to a finished door if I don't have to because of the need to refinish the edge. ----- Original Message ----- From: Matt To: [email protected] Sent: Wednesday, September 16, 2009 9:57 PM Subject: [BlindHandyMan] Bathroom door sticking Yes, the bathroom seems to be testing us here lately. First was the fan, then the shower door, now the door to the room itself seems to be sticking. It's suddenly hard to push shut, wood against wood somewhere evidently. The weather has changed though. It went from hot and dry to constant rain a few days back, this problem has shown up since. What do or can we do? Wait for the weather to change? Tighten screws? What do you folks have to say? Thanks, Matt [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
