Betsy, Here in Florida just about every modern home has a ridge vent. Basically what it is is an aluminum cap that runs along the peak of your roof. It has vent leuvers in it designed in such a way that they do not allow rain in. What they do is let hot air out. How it works is that as the sun heats your roof and the air beneath it, i.e., in your attic, the warmed air rises and escapes through the ridge vent. This causes a suction that draws cooler, outside air in through your soffet vents. The end result is that your attic stays a little cooler. This can result in slightly lower air-conditioning bills in warm climates.
Installing a ridge vent is best done when you need a new roof. Trying to do it on an existing roofing system is a recipe for trouble unless you really know what you are doing. It will probably cost about four times as much as well.
