Since I posted the pvc idea, I'll respond, but some others on the list have
added their ideas which are reflected here.

I started with a piece of half inch pvc. Length doesn't matter. If it
works for you, you can make two or three of varying lengths.

Then I took a dowel which could slide inside the pvc. I used my table saw,
but a router mounted in a table might work better. I cut off about half of
the dowel side, leaving a flat surface down most of the lenth. But I left
about an inche of full round dowl at each end. This full round part will
keep the pieces from coming apart when it is in use.

Someone pointed out that you can buy half round. Then you could just glue a
one inch piece of half round on each end.

The dowel should be the same length as the pvc.

I also cut a one inch piece of pvc to clue on one end of the dowel, just to
make it uniform, so that both ends of the measuring device are the same
size.

But as someone helpfully pointed out, making a square block on that end
would keep it from rolling around.

The reason for the half dowel, or half round, is that you need a space for a
nut inside the pvc, which will fit between the wall

Of the pvc and the flat part of the dowel.

Then I drilled a hole near the end of the long piece of pvc. I put a small
bolt through the hole and into the nut.

Then, when you tighten the bolt, it holds the dowel snugly at a fixed point,
so you can transfer measurements from, say, a work piece to a table saw.

I've also found it works quite well to just clamp a couple of sticks
together with a c clamp for transferring a measurement.

Blessings,

Tom

Subject: [BlindHandyMan] Story Sticks

Hi,

I was following a thread of story sticks with great interest. I'd like to
make several of varying lengths, but I seem to have lost them. The ones
made out of PVC and square or round dowel are the ones I am thinking of.

If you have the posts, would you please forward? I looked on the
blindhandyman file page and did not find it there. I think it would be a
good addition.

Thanks, and Merry Christmas,

Keith
