Well, my son-in-law replaced the supply line. He told me that he could not
turn off the water below the toilet and had to run down to the basement to
shut it off. So today I put a few tools in a tool bag and walked over to
replace the stop. I decided not to do any of the work but to talk him
through it so he could learn. I had him remove the supply line and the old
stop. Fortunately it was threaded and not sweated.
I then sent him to the hardware store to purchase a ball valve, he returned
with what they called a quarter turn stop. Basically the same thing but has
a handle like the old stops. He had to also get a nipple since the old stop
was male and the new one female.
I gave him some Teflon tape and told him how to wrap the threads. After
everything was done there was a small drip. So back down to turn the water
off and removed the valve. All of the Teflon tape was pushed back. I had him
rewrap and again put on the new valve. This one worked with no drips.
I did have one startling moment. The tub faucet is very close to the toilet.
After he turned off the water he opened the tub faucet. I was standing back
and when he first turned on the water I heard the rush. I was afraid to look
at the floor. I did not recheck his work and thought that there was water
going everywhere.
