As Terry said, if the object whose color you want to identify is smaller than will cover the sensor of the identifier, you need a black background on which to put the unknown object E.G. wire etc.
Otherwise a colored, nonm-black background must optically combine colors with the color of the unknown object. The identifier is doing exactly what you asked it to do, you just have to ask the right question. Tom Fowle
