This situation is strange. Earlier I had orca running and espeakup and
had turned espeak off to run startx and both worked. Now only espeakup
works with orca not starting. This new system does have an hdmi port
and I got a strange acpi warning and the only warning in dmesg output
which may have bearing on this situation or may not.
sudo -i dmesg|grep -i "warn"
[ 0.000000] ACPI BIOS Warning (bug): Optional FADT field
Pm2ControlBlock has zero address or length: 0x0000000000000000/0x1
(20150930/tbfadt-654)
I have alsacap on this machine now and will send that output next since
it may be helpful.
