The answer I got was partly correct, but using that I got this problem solved. It turns out the classic key map is not good. As soon as I switched to the flat key map and then reset the current key map and then tried to log into my google account I had no problem getting the login done on the first try. I don't know what the other two key maps will or won't do, but switching away from classical solved this problem for me.
